Agroforestryy

A definition:

[Agroforestry]...involves the intentional manipulation of forested lands to produce food, medicinal or decorative products in addition to timber and firewood. Forest crops with economic potential in the Northeast include the herbal medicinal plants American ginseng (panex quinquefolium) and golden seal (hydrastis canadensis), a variety of mushrooms and sugar maple (acer saccharum) sap.

Ahimsa Village property is mostly wooded.  It features a mix of hardwoods and pine forest.  We are actively engaged in the following activities:

  1. Mushroom production including Maitake and Shiitake -
  2. Ginseng and golden seal production
  3. Forest herbs
  4. Maple sugaring - we have a maple sugaring co-op involving 2 members of Ahimsa and 2 neighbors.  If interested you would share in the cost of the maple arch and assist with gathering wood, sap, and boiling it down.  The syrup is divided equally among the co-op members.

Contact Kelle Kersten at magicjubilee@yahoo.com if you would like to get involved in any of these projects.
